Dear Jennifer ,
Thanks for the newsletter. Extremely interesting. What I am attaching are some images (rather large I’m afraid) of a rather unusual gas station in a village called Stockbridge near to where I live in Hampshire. Recently this garage/gas station has closed (presumably due to the great age of its owners!).   It was one of few remaining stations which still had the old fashioned fuel pumps with tubes on long arms which reached across to deliver petrol(gas) to cars on the road. What makes the gas station building so different is that it used to be a bordello.  Many years ago cattle used to be herded to England from Wale.  Stockbridge was one of the stops on the route and the bordello was used to ‘service’ the drovers.  The ladies used to display themselves on the balcony (I don’t think they had the tyre wreaths in those days). I don’t know who owns the gas station now – think there is someone living there so perhaps I can find out what is happening to the building and also more the local history if you are interested.  Regards   - Brenda Parker

The gigantic abandoned general store and gas station at Lockhart, CA. Hard to believe that this area could support such a large business because there is NOTHING out here now.
