Darlington School Workshop - Rome, GA Student Organizer - Marcia Freeland Students participate in community art project 2/6/2009 10:34:00 AM, Lakeside Lines
As part of the International Fiber Collaborative, Darlington students made “leaves” out of recycled materials on Feb. 3. These leaves, along with those created by other participants from around the world, will be displayed on a full-sized tree at Big Springs International Park in Huntsville, Ala., in April.
“Bringing this project to Darlington’s campus serves more than one purpose,” said Nicole Witt, head of house and coordinator of the project. “It is a unique way to demonstrate how people can all rely and relate to one another to accomplish one common goal no matter where they are from. It also reinforces our newly expanded recycling program and our efforts to be a ‘green’ learning environment.”
Students used materials like aluminum cans, swim caps, old pajamas and T-shirts, pipe cleaners, flip flops, cardboard boxes and milk cartons to construct their leaves.
“All in all, we had close to 350 participants and ended up with about 400 leaves,” Witt said. “I really hope our students put some thought into recycling and keeping our earth green. It’s important to realize how fragile our planet really is, and if we all try just a little bit through we can make a big difference.”
At the end of the project, the leaves were judged based on creativity. First place went to Anna Sea, second place went to John Wilhoite and third place went to Bi Young Lee, all of whom are freshmen.
